In moments of crisis, true character shows. While many are frozen by fear, some rare individuals rise above it — leaving their homes, families, and their own safety behind to protect others. Among them is our colleague, Pavlos Zivanas, whose extraordinary dedication during the July 23 Limassol wildfires reflects the highest ideals of service and humanity.

Pavlos volunteers with the Limassol Civil Defense Research and Rescue Department, combining expertise, training, and a strong sense of duty. During the catastrophic fires, he and his team were on the frontlines, facing a fast-moving fire that threatened lives, homes, and the surrounding environment.

Pavlos played a key role in evacuating vulnerable residents, including the elderly and those with medical conditions, ensuring they reached safe areas, supporting patients and families on site often under extreme heat, smoke, and dangerous conditions, and fighting the advancing fires, working tirelessly alongside other volunteers and civil defense personnel to contain and extinguish the flames.

What sets Pavlos apart is not just his skill or courage under pressure, but his reliable commitment to helping others without expecting anything in return. His actions remind us that heroism is often quiet, measured not by recognition but by the lives protected and the difference made.

In honoring Pavlos, we also honor every volunteer who steps forward selflessly in times of crisis. Their work is a powerful reminder of what it truly means to be human: to act with compassion, courage, and integrity even when the odds are overwhelming.
